Okay, so you’re thinking of remodeling your kitchen right about now… but you’re just a tad bit worried that what you want to do might end up being trendy right now, but out of style in a couple years, right? Don’t worry, this is so normal. Most people who consider remodeling their kitchen go through this phase, which is exactly why you/they need to read this article. What are some kitchen “trends” with “staying power?” You know– the kind that help make your kitchen look good and function well not just for this year or next, but for at least two decades?
Light Coloring
This one might surprise you, but at least consider it: go white. The more white in the kitchen, the better. Why white? Well, it’s bright, for one thing, and, even better, white simply never goes out of style… ever. Does that mean you should have white countertops, white cabinets and white backsplashes? Yes! You can always use kitchen towels and appliances and kitchen art to add pops of color in the room. Starting with basic white, though? Chic, simple, neutral and stylish, always!
But wait, what if you hate white? Okay then, go for a gray color scheme. In order to not have your kitchen look like a morgue though, you’ll want to keep gray as the base color of stuff in the kitchen, paired with warm materials, such as wooden cabinets or bold reds/yellows to liven the place up. Next to white, gray is a “close enough” neutral color people can work with, and it looks good for years.
Appliances, Countertops and Lighting
Next, let’s think about appliances, shall we? These days, smaller is better. So, get a smaller fridge, a smaller microwave, and/or a smaller cooktop and see if it still meets your needs. If these smaller appliances work well for you, then you’ve got more room for other stuff in the kitchen. The days of needing hulkingly big appliances are over; this isn’t the 1970s.
Now about those countertops: yes, granite has been so popular for a while now, but if you want to be trendy and have something that’ll look good in 2028, go with quartz countertops. Quartz is tough and doesn’t need to be sealed annually– ‘nuff said.
When it comes to lighting, now’s the time to changeover to LEDs. They can go places other lights can’t easily go, they come in a variety of colors, and, best of all, they emit no heat! Oh, and they’re energy efficient, lasting about 50,000 hours on average. Wow.
Planning For Your Future
Finally, everybody is aging– so embrace “aging in place” even if you’re in your 20s or 30s. If you’re going to remodel the kitchen, have it modified so that someone using a walker or wheelchair could have no trouble getting around and accessing stuff. This “aging in place” design makes sense for ALL people– a good trend if ever there was one.
